Retroactive Pay
Research assistants and research associates should have received retroactive pay on the pay of Thursday December 7. For those not at the top of the pay scale, retroactive pay should have covered the step increases for 2021 (2.5%) and 2022 (2.5%), granted the employee was employed on June 1 of each of those years. It should have also included retroactive pay for the period of June 1-July 22 2023, which would have included the 2023 economic and step increases. Research assistants at the top of the pay scale should have received, in lieu of step increases, a 2% lumpsum payment for each year they were active, as well as retroactive pay for the economic increase for the period of June 1- July 22, 2023. For the purposes of calculating your expected retroactive pay, keep in mind that the 2021 2.5% increase would have applied to your pay for the year of 2022 as well, in addition to the 2022 2.5% increase. Someone who was employed on each of 2021 and 2022, can therefore expect their retroactive step increase pay for those 2 years to equal roughly 7.5% of their salary.
If you have not received your retroactive pay or if you believe the pay you received was the incorrect amount, please contact AMURE president Sean Cory (sean.cory@aerum-amure.ca). We are already aware of several issues with how McGill calculated retroactive pay, including for those who are at the top of their respective scale, those who changed labs or departments in the past 3 years, and those who no longer work at McGill but were still employed on the day the collective agreement was signed (June 28, 2023). Sean has already filed several grievances for these situations. For more detailed information on what the retroactive pay is supposed to include, please refer to the collective agreement.
